It was the sixth day of action at the Monterrey Open and my feature semifinal saw the top seed Garbine Muguruza do battle with the sixth seed Ana Bogdan for a spot in the final. In the end, it was Muguruza who showed why she is the world number three by fighting past Bogdan for the 6-0, 7-5 win. It was not a high level from Muguruza all the time as there was the occasional error in the second set but she was strong on serve and especially showed her class in the moments that she needed too. It wasn’t a good opener from Bogdan as her serve was all over the place and Muguruza’s serve was too strong to break but the Romanian came out inspired in the second set and she was really to taking but after missing out on opportunities for the double break, the wind left her sails.
The opening two games of the set were pivotal as Ana Bogdan was shanking returns and unable to do anything on serve to give Garbine Muguruza the early break. When the Spaniard was serving at 2-0 up, Bogdan had a reasonable return game with good winners and she had two break points to break back but Muguruza saved them both with good tennis and Bogdan didn’t get another opportunity for a while. This showed in the next game, as the Romanian started with two double faults before giving Muguruza the double break and then, despite Bogdan showing a reasonable return level in the next game, Muguruza was winning all the long rallies and she took a 5-0 lead. The final game of the set was the best on serve from Bogdan with some much-needed first serves but Muguruza came up with some unplayable returns to break for the bagel set.
We saw a big change in Ana Bogdan at the start of the second set as she came out hitting incredible returns and broke in the first game as Garbine Muguruza had an intensity drop. She followed that up with a great service game while showing off her backhands but after that Muguruza identified that this was going to be more of a fight. She played a perfect service game to get on the board at 1-2 but Bogdan responded by playing her own phenomenal service game to hold to love. Desperate to keep this set close, Muguruza played the third straight love service game of the match and even though Bogdan didn’t follow suit, she managed to hold after Muguruza errors for the lead at 2-4. A big opportunity came for Bogdan here as there were errors from Muguruza early on and the sixth seed had two break points for the double break but the top seed provided some big serves to save them and hold. The disappointment lingered for Bogdan as she was struggling to close the next game and Muguruza managed to get the break back after a series of long rallies in a mammoth game. The two exchanged service holds for 5-5 but then after that Muguruza dug her heels in and managed to reel off two comfortable games with top tennis and there was nothing Bogdan could do in the end as the world number three showed why she had that position to secure the 6-0, 7-5 win.
