Action started in Bastad today but it was a rainy day and only one match was completed throughout the whole day. My feature match was obviously the only match completed between Anastasija Sevastova and Anna Blinkova.
The match saw Anastasija Sevastova come past Anna Blinkova 6-3, 6-1 without a lot of fuss in the first match on Centre Court. Blinkova, who is a very young Russian, wasn’t able to do much on serve and Sevastova continued to show off the consistency that she has displayed throughout much of the year so far. The match started fairly evenly with a few nerves being displayed from both players but at about 3-3, Sevastova’s level rised and she reeled off three straight games including two breaks of serves to take the opening set. Blinkova was now starting to panic and her serve just got worse and worse which is evident in the stats that show she hit 9 double faults and only won 44% of points behind her first serve throughout the entire match. The second set wasn’t much better for Blinkova as she held serve in the second game of the set but after that she didn’t win another game. This kind of result shows us that Blinkova, who is only 18, still hasn’t developed a great mental game because she kept getting more down on herself, which prevented her from playing her best. In terms of Sevastova, this is the kind of results she has been achieving this year and if she keeps playing like this she is a contender for every event she enters.
